RUBBING ALCOHOL - Isopropyl Alcohol - Lifestyles - By Mandisa Brown
A seriously underrated product for use as a substitute for after shave, just ask Neutrogena Cosmetics the company that markets unscented and non-colored lotions, creams and other cosmetic products.
An unscented after-shave product? Have you ever heard of anything like that?
Of course not because any unscented alcohol based skin care product would essentially be the lowly and very inexpensive over the counter generic rubbing isopropyl bottle of alcohol.
And this element would put a serious crimp in many low-end fragrance manufacturing groups, companies that have over the years labored in purchasing products at the end of their lifecycles and have re-packaged them into low end brands you can always find at the heavy discounter chains in the USA and selling big in overseas markets.
Ever wonder what happened to brand names such as Kelvin Kline jeans, Paco Rabane and Christian Dior colognes?
They are still around, however you will not find these names at JC Penny or a Robinsons-May and hell or high water you will not find any of them at Nordstrom, the flagship department stores that sell a Beverly Hills-Rodeo Drive ultra upscale retail atmosphere at the local mall.
You will find these lowly brands at Mervyn’s, Ross, 99cents, and many drug stores and pharmacy-mini mart chains.
For many consumers these brands retain nostalgia and value despite having exhausted their power as a leader of influence on the most current fashion trends.
And these brands remain odds on favorites against unknown and non advertised products that are imported directly from China and other Asian markets and sold in pretty packaging and labels at large club warehouses such as Costco and Sam’s Club.
More often than not, these unknown labels are re-sold to independent retailers and end up being offered to the consumer at your independent gas station mini mart store or corner convenience store.
So while Neutrogena means well when it offers non-scented and non-colored products to skin sensitive demographics and consumers that face allergic reactions to formulated products with additives, it does however open the proverbial Pandora Box on Luxury Goods as reviewed in an earlier segment by our senior marketing consultant, Mr. Maertin.
And rubbing alcohol has a long history of being useful.
It would not be the first time this product has multiple applications.
It is used as a sterilizing agent on the skin and as a scratch cleaner, for removing grease and glue smudges on furniture and many surface applications. It can also be used as a reviving agent in case you feel noxious.
In the Old West, the public did not have the luxury of rubbing alcohol and in the event of an injury, most individuals made use of a makeshift substitute such as hard liquor, be it whiskey or cognac or moonshine to sterilize the wound.
Today rubbing alcohol is available as a highly refined and medically formulated product - clearly labeled for pharmaceutical purposes and for good reason.
Should the public interpolate the link between Neutrogena’s campaigns for allergenic and fragrance free products and the availability of rubbing alcohol as a low cost substitute for fragrance free after shave, the little old lady in Pasadena will have herself a fit crying over the world of markets that were conquered ... and lost - thanks to a more caring and gentle marketer and manufacturer, right here on our own West Coast in the state of California.
